Amakula 2004 - 'From Life' |
With the theme From Life, the first edition of Amakula Kampala presented in the course of ten days a wide range of films from around the world in order to offer the many dimensions of cinema that attempt to grapple with the riddles of truth and reality in what we commonly call documentary film.
We chose a range of seminal films in the development of the documentary from the Lumière brothers of 1895 to the first truly sub-Saharan African film Afrique sur Seine by Paulin Vieyra from Senegal and jumping from Zacharias Kunuks invention of Inuit cinema in the snowy stretches of Northern-Canada of the 90s to the future with Balufu Bakupa-Kanyindas Afro@digital from Congo. Special attention was given to the broad diversity of documentary productions on the African continent, many of which had likewise never been shown before in Uganda.
A further emphasis of Amakula Kampala was the determination to seek its audiences in different types of venues throughout the city. While the National Theater was the main location, the festival extended itself to cultural and educative centers, outdoor screenings in various neighbourhoods and the video halls in the poorer regions of the city, in order to reach people in their own environment. Through collaborations with many different venues Amakula Kampala found a broad base of interest and support within the city.
