Sao Gamba “Painted Stories”

Sao Gamba (1940-2004), who was the 1st East-African feature filmmaker was also an excellent painter and sculpture. As the costs of filmmaking restricted him to get his ideas on celluloid, he started putting his film scripts on canvas. His art expresses his ongoing quest for Africa’s cultural heritage diving deep into the oral history of the continent. The paintings shown here dwell extensively on myth, legends, traditions, and the rituals of African people. Sao Gamba tried to create an ancient cultural mirror of African people, so the present and the future generations could have a glimpse of their dying heritage. The artistic presentation clearly defines the legends and myths in a manner where the whole story is compressed on canvas; just as film posters try to narrate the whole film to the would be moviegoers. Sao has written full text to each painting backed by a relevant poem.

Bus Camera Obscura – Found Cinema Workshop

This workshop created by New York artist Simon Lee is orientated towards the building and running of Bus Obscura: an art project that takes an ordinary bus and turns it into a camera, a projector, and an auditorium all in one, with the addition of tiny camera pinholes in place of the windows. It is offered to approach the art of moving images with a more experimental and artistic attitude to induce specific experiences in the viewer that encompass sound, vision and tactility all at once beyond the frame of the canvas, the space of the sculpture or the screen of the film.

During the festival the bus will be moving around Kampala while the natural film experience it produces will create an event for the passengers who come for the ride. Daily between September 15 and 23 it will leave regularly between 9 am and 6 pm from the National Theater, or you can hop on it anywhere you find it driving in the city!
