Baxmba Waves will provide musical accompaniment of Buster Keatons The General (1927)
Baxmba Waves is a post-modern multi-cultural fusion group based in Kampala, Uganda. Formed in 1991 under the name Big 5 Band, the band began with the vision of reinstating a lost cultural identity to Ugandan music: giving a modern approach to traditional music. As a side project, they formed Kampala Jazz All Stars in 2003 to introduce Jazz to the people of Uganda. Baxmba Waves is the next phase of Ugandan music, featuring a cultural dialogue between the styles of Uganda with diverse styles spanning the globe.
The name Bakisimba (Baxmba) comes from a popular traditional dance and rhythm from the central region of Uganda which provides a foundation for our music. The music is characteristically Ugandan at its roots, but its leaves and branches constantly grow and expand into new territory. The group seeks to create a sound that is both unique and unconventional without losing sight of its cultural heritage, employing modern techniques and ideas without the use of electronic instruments. Its vision is a society without borders, where cultures mix and share peaceful ideas freely. This is why the group has a keen interest in creative collaborations and workshops with musicians we meet anywhere in the world.
The band members are;
Godfrey Lubuulwa: Accordion, keyboards and vocals
Steven Hager: Guitar and vocals
Bakkabulindi Samuel: Percussions
Nsilu wa basilu Papa: Bass, Vocals
Zzimbe Isac: Drums, Vocals
Albert Bisaso: Traditional instruments
Baxmba will lend their eclectic approach to creating a soundtrack for the elaborate comedy slapstick of the great Buster Keaton who is considered to be at his peak with The General both as a cinematic storyteller and as a physical performer without peer.
