The third edition of the Amakula Kampala International Film Festival 2006, celebrated films from around the world, animated by the theme of Others' Voices.
The programme was gathered into four primary sections: The African Panorama (with a section for classics as well as for contemporary films), the Regional Focus on the Cinema of Eastern Africa (Uganda and the many countries surrounding it between Mozambique and Eritrea), Contemporary World Cinema and Landmarks (cinema classics over the last century).
Special programmes included Honoring Voices where we paid tribute to the great losses of Ali Farka Touré, Brenda Fassie and Gordon Parks and remembered the unforgettable voice of Paul Robeson; Others' Voices are Always in the Air where we provided a selection of one hundred and one great African and diasporan voices that cover the span of the past centuryl; Voice and Voiceovers: a Tribute to Jean Rouch, where we focussed on the man who had a greater impact on the beginnings of the African independent cinema than any other single figure; and Indian Playback Seance where we encouraged the Plaza Theater's ghosts by bringing back some of the greatest Indian musical treats.
At the closing night of the festival, the Golden Impala Eastern Africa Short Film Award was given to the winner of the competition for short film and video productions from Eastern Africa.
Other new features of the third edition were the Alliance Francaise Video Viewing Lounge which showed special screenings everyday during the festival from 11am to 7pm, the Amakula Kids Reel with lots of performances and films for the little ones, and the Amakula Youth Reel including a workshop by Moses Kibuuka Sejombwe Muwanga as well as a number of films.
