Theme: Visionary Histories

The 6th Amakula Kampala International Film Festival which started on the 6th of November ended on 14th, 2009


  1. 9days of over 200films from around the world were screened
  2. The 6th Congress on Eastern African Cinema a three day event started 4 days to the closing night
  3. Live music dance and story telling performances was in place all focusing on this year's festival theme Visionary Histories
  4. Workshops, discussions, Master Class
  5. The Golden Impala Award went to Mozambique
  6. And the Bonfire which attracted hundreds of people summed it up with performances from different local artists. Every one got served with free drinks and eats

We have Shifted our customary dates from May, the 2009 Amakula Kampala International Film Festival took place from November 6th to the 14th with the challenging theme of "Visionary Histories": the theme stresses the importance of looking back into history in order to understand and create a meaningful future. We shall see how history is made, changed and reconsidered and the different meanings it can deliver in reconstructing contemporary African society.

The Golden Impala Award

5th Golden Impala Eastern Africa Short Film Competition
The jury consisted of Annemarie Morais (Canada), Robbie Wodomal (Uganda) and Fleur Van Dissel (The Netherlands)

This year's Golden Impala Award was won by

"The Storm" by Orlando Mesquita

from Mozambique.

The following films got a special mention from the jury:

  1. Daddy Ruhorahoza, Lost in the South (Rwanda, 2008, 17min)
  2. Joel Karekezi, Pardon (Rwanda, 13min)
  3. Rogério Manjate, I love you (Mozambique, 2007, 3min)
  4. Winnie Gamisha, The Painter (Uganda, 2009, 24 min)

Amakula Culture Club

Amakula Kampala continues with its programs for year round activities and training at the Amakula headquarters in Mengo. We have a new season of weekly screenings every Tuesdays at our Amakula Culture Club in the year which is free and open to the public as before. Amakula Mobile Cinema

The Amakula Mobile Cinema will also offer film screenings to schools and communities in and outside Kampala. All new developments will be reported on this website so do check here for current status reports.
