Summary:

Alfred Hitchcock perhaps created the most perfect example of the Kuleshov Effect in action over the course of one feature film. The fact that the action has been restricted to a single apartment and the hero has been constrained with a broken leg significantly curtailing his movements while a large window beckons with a view to a large courtyard with a virtual microcosm to be explored particularly with the help of binnoculars and cameras is no doubt helpful in this respect.

Director:Alfred Hitchcock

Program:Parallel Pathways

Year:
1954

Duration:
112

Summary:

As the ultimate self reflexive metaphor for the projection of a film and the viewing experience of the audience, this film, coming, as it does, at the center of the twentieth century, could be viewed as the conceptual hub around which the entire vortex of thinking and discussion about the cinema apparatus turns. The film itself is disarmingly simple. A photographer is confined to his small apartment with a broken leg after an accident. To pass the time, he watches the goings-on of his motley assortment of neighbours through his window, for who he creates different stories while naming them.
